Godzilla in Hell is, as other reviewers have already pointed out - very odd. As a longtime Godzilla fan, this story was a very intriguing one. It doesn't have much text, as Godzilla cannot talk, and the story is very vague. This can be seen in two ways, and it's the reason I gave it a 4 star when really wish to give it a 4.5 There's something deeper being said here about the nature of Godzilla, as he is unfazed by the horrors of Hell no matter what. Even when worshipped by angels and demons alike, he does not waver. He simply moves on. I won't spoil the ending, but it's - pun entirely intended - weird as hell.I think the beauty of this book is in it's flexible story. Because there's not much text, the reader has to connect the dots in many ways. What is that weird blob? What do the demonized kaiju mean? What's Godzilla's personality here? It's, at least in my view, a way to get the reader thinking about Godzilla in a way that most of his comics spell out for you pretty clearly. Should he be in Hell? Does he deserve this punishment? Why does he ignore the calls of both Heaven and Hell? How does he feel about all this? It's unique for a Godzilla book, and that's a good thing. As for the actual meat, I really don't want to go into detail because I believe I'll spoil a lot of it. There's a lot of demon kaiju fights, and Godzilla interacting with the Hellscape. It's really more of a journey, I think, than a straight up fighting series. Sure, there are fights, but I was never truly viewing the fight as a battle for supremacy. It was always more about the significance of it's meaning - Godzilla has to fight a number of close allies and bitter enemies. This goes back to what I said before. The art that portrays all this is very solid, for the most part. Each issue has a different artist, and my God is Bob Eggleton's issue beautiful. The last issue in the book is also fantastic in my opinion. My only major complaint is that the art tends to fluctuate a little. Godzilla looks much like his 2000 / 2002 versions (which are very close in design) for the majority of the series, but in issue #3 he inexplicably becomes 2001 Godzilla. I enjoyed the presence of that design, as we've never seen it in comics before (to my knowledge), but the fact that the big guy warps from one version to another in the middle was a bit jarring. And, as talented as they were, the artist from issue #4 seemed to have too cartoonish of a style for me. Chalk that up to personal preference if you will, but for a "Godzilla in Hell" storyline, it just seemed a bit too cartoony.Overall, if you're a dedicated Godzilla fan, I definitely recommend... well, let's face it, with the crazy concept this has, you probably will get it regardless of my opinion. Regardless, it definitely is a solid read, but bear in mind that you'll be left with questions, and I think that may have been the point. If you are new to Godzilla, I don't recommend reading this currently. I'd get more familiar with the character before you try it, but once you have, you'll definitely enjoy it. I absolutely adore James Stokoe. His issue of this is fantastic and a must-read. A surreal, silent, bleak journey through Godzilla's hell. At one point he is overwhelmed by coiling ropes of the countless souls he's flattened or vaporized over the years. Stuff like that happens and it's rad as heck. But, Stokoe is only here for issue 1, and this is a combination of 5 issues. The other ones vary in quality. None of them are bad, some of them are great, but others are really middling, to the point where I was just flipping from page to page in a very short amount of time. It takes you very little time to consume the issues that don't pack in interesting content into the art and the world-building, and that's a downside. So, overall, I'd say it's worth it for the cool concept and Stotoke issue. But don't expect anything spectacular.
