I really liked this book the first time I read it, when it was published by Samhain in 2014. I liked it again when I found it on kindle, but didn't realize it was a reprint before I purchased it--again! Oh well, it's a favorite of mine: the kind of book that makes you look for anything else by the author.It's very much in the tradition of Georgette Heyer (who loved her some dandies and Corinthians and everyone in between, although I guess she did have negative depictions of lesbians), especially some of her more quiet novels like "A quiet gentleman" and "a civil contract." If it were a mystery novel it would be a "cozy,": no anatomical descriptions, but quite a bit of loving.Hugh is indeed a quiet gentleman, a war veteran whose lingering disability is a great trouble to his self-confidence and his role in society, but who nevertheless works conscientiously in an office for the military. Theo Lindsay is very dashing, everything that Hugh is not, and everything he needs to become who he will.Lady Emily is quite one of my favorite characters ever. I envision a whole series of novels where she helps hapless heroes find their male counterparts.At this stage in my life, I'm rather more interested in characters who don't make the cut, such as the Spanish camp-follower Danilo. HIS story seems like it would be very compelling indeed. I find that this author is able to transport me back to the time period the plot and character exists in.It is this sort of change in story & plot that makes for different type of read as it focuses on the social restrictions and limitations of that period. Nevertheless, the relationship of the principal characters is paramount and draws the reader into that world.Having read several other books by the author, I find I am rarely disappointed. Perhaps the plot/story does not go in the direction I may have hoped but that is not a lack of poor writing--just another direction in the story and perhaps one I did not want or anticipate.Worthy of reading.
